Bromegrass

Bromegrass (most commonly smooth brome, Bromus inermis) is a cool‑season, sod‑forming perennial grass valued for its dense root‑and‑rhizome network and vigorous spring growth. Growers choose it as a cover because it establishes a durable soil‑protecting sod, scavenges nutrients, and produces reliable biomass while tolerating drought and temperature extremes. Missouri Extension overview; USFS FEIS species review. (extension.missouri.edu)

• Erosion Control: Dense perennial grass strips trap sediment exceptionally well; grass filter strips 15–45 ft (4.5–13.7 m) wide reduced sediment 96–99% in field trials, and nitrate‑N in runoff 94–98%, showing the power of sod‑forming grasses for erosion control and nutrient retention. USDA‑ARS summary of filter strip performance. In erosion models, a “good sod” cover has a very low USLE/RUSLE C‑factor (~0.01), indicating very low soil‑loss potential compared with tilled cropland. USDA Agricultural Handbook 537. (ars.usda.gov)
• Weed Suppression: Bromegrass forms a competitive, closed canopy; extension guidance notes that “maintaining a dense, healthy stand of smooth bromegrass is the most effective way to suppress weeds.” MU Extension. (extension.missouri.edu)
• Soil Structure Improvement: A fibrous root system with far‑reaching rhizomes improves aggregation and surface stability; roots have been observed as deep as 9.4 ft (2.87 m), with large root mass concentrated in the top 3 in (7.6 cm) that binds soil. USFS FEIS. Perennial grass phases also boost infiltration; across seven sites, infiltration averaged 62% higher under perennial grass or no‑till than under conventional tillage. USDA‑ARS study. (research.fs.usda.gov)
• Water Management: The sod reduces runoff and increases infiltration (see above), and brome tolerates dry periods by going semi‑dormant in summer while resuming growth with moisture. MU Extension. Trials in the West and Great Plains consistently show better infiltration and soil hydraulic properties under perennial grass covers than annual row crops. USDA‑ARS infiltration comparisons. (extension.missouri.edu)
• Disease/Pest Break: Incorporating a grass (non‑host) phase in rotation helps interrupt many broadleaf disease and nematode cycles; SARE advises using cover crops and rotation to suppress pests and to avoid building up host‑specific pathogens. SARE—Managing Pests with Cover Crops. Note: as with other grasses, heavy grass residue can sometimes increase cutworm/wireworm risk ahead of grass crops; scout if planting corn or sorghum after terminated sod. SARE cautionary notes. (sare.org)
• Nitrogen Management (scavenging): As a non‑legume, bromegrass captures residual soil N; SARE summarizes that when planted as a fall cover, non‑legume covers “consistently take up 30–50 lb N/ac.” SARE—Cover Crops for Sustainable Crop Rotations. At the field edge, perennial grass filter strips have cut nitrate‑N in runoff by 24–48% in Nebraska studies and as high as 94–98% in Kentucky trials, depending on strip width and site. Univ. of Nebraska/USFS JEQ synthesis; USDA‑ARS chapter. (sare.org)
• Biomass Production: Typical forage biomass is 3–5 tons dry matter (DM)/ac under good management in the Northeast; across multi‑state trials, annual yields have ranged from <1 to >6 tons DM/ac, with top yields near 4.8 tons DM/ac. Kansas reports 3–4+ tons/ac under adequate rainfall. UMaine Extension; WVU Extension bulletin; K‑State Forage Facts. (extension.umaine.edu)

• Seeding Rate (drill and broadcast):
• Drill (pure stand): 15–20 lb PLS/ac at 1/4–1/2 in depth. K‑State eUpdate 2026. Many states also list 10–15 lb/ac for drilled pure stands; when mixed with a legume, reduce brome to ~6–10 lb/ac. MU Extension; Penn State. (agronomy.k-state.edu)
• Broadcast: Where broadcasting is used (e.g., renovating patches), K‑State recommends ~20 lb PLS/ac with firming/incorporation (cultipacker). K‑State eUpdate 2026. As a general rule for forages, increase seeding rate 10–20% when broadcasting to offset poorer seed‑to‑soil contact, and roll afterward to firm the seedbed. Iowa State; UNH Extension. (agronomy.k-state.edu)
• Seeding Depth:
• 0.25–0.5 inches is optimal; shallower on fine/firm seedbeds. MU Extension; Penn State; K‑State eUpdate 2026. (extension.missouri.edu)
• Soil Type and pH:
• Best on moist, well‑drained clays to silt loams; tolerates a wide pH range. NRCS lists smooth brome adapted from pH ~5.5 to 8.0; performance is best near neutral. UMass Extension (soil preference); NRCS species adaptation table; K‑State eUpdate 2026—pH note. (umass.edu)
• Planting Time (seasonal windows by region):
• Central/Great Plains (e.g., KS/NE): Late summer–early fall plantings are most reliable; winter or early spring seedings are also used where conditions allow. K‑State eUpdate 2026; UNL—cool‑season grass planting period. (agronomy.k-state.edu)
• Lower/Mid‑Missouri Valley and Midwest: Late February–April or September. MU Extension—seeding dates. (extension.missouri.edu)
• Intermountain/High Elevation West: Early spring or dormant (late fall/winter) seedings on firm seedbeds can succeed; late‑fall seeding under snow has worked in Utah. NRCS “After the Fire—Seeding” (timing guidance); USFS FEIS—late fall/early winter seeding under snow, Utah. (nrcs-prod.azureedge.us)
• Termination (methods and timing):
• Chemical: For reliable termination of the sod before planting the next crop, apply a non‑selective systemic herbicide (glyphosate) when bromegrass is actively growing (late summer/early fall or spring). Extension renovation bulletins recommend complete sod kill for successful no‑till seeding of the next crop. Virginia Tech—No‑Till Seeding & Sod kill; Univ. of Wisconsin PAT manual—pasture renovation with glyphosate or paraquat, timing notes. (ext.vt.edu)
• Mechanical: Multiple tillage passes may be needed to fully disrupt the rhizomatous sod; allow time for regrowth and retreat if necessary before final seedbed prep (common renovation practice in extension guides above). (ext.vt.edu)
• Caution: Where only suppression (not full kill) is used ahead of interseeding (e.g., sod‑seeding legumes), plan for strong early weed control and recognize that sod competition can reduce establishment. USDA‑ARS sod‑seeding research. (digitalcommons.unl.edu)
• Rotational Considerations:
• Ahead of a legume companion or following cover: limit N at establishment so the legume can fix N effectively (e.g., restrict to ~40–50 lb N/ac in brome–legume mixes). Penn State. (extension.psu.edu)
• High‑C:N grass residue can temporarily immobilize N; plan starter N for the following cash crop and/or mix with a legume to moderate C:N. SARE—Conservation tillage with cover crops. (sare.org)
• Pest note: As with other grasses, heavy grass residue before corn can heighten risk of cutworms/wireworms—scout and manage accordingly. SARE—Managing Pests with Cover Crops. (sare.org)
• Water Requirements and Drought Tolerance:
• Brome shows good drought tolerance for a cool‑season grass—better than orchardgrass in some western irrigated systems—and often goes semi‑dormant in hot, dry midsummer, resuming with moisture/short days. NMSU Circular on irrigated pastures; CSU/Intermountain forage guide—semi‑dormant under short‑water; MU Extension—drought tolerance noted. (pubs.nmsu.edu)
